Guest Review: Green Bees Cloth Diapers- A Man’s Perspective

Hello everyone. I would like to state that I am not one of your regular Natural Mamas. My wife Jessica is. I am a Natural Dad I guess. You don’t often see those, or so I am told.

So, I would like to start out by saying that I am a fan of cloth diapering. I recommend it to all of my friends (future fathers and mothers alike). Usually I recommend it for the following reasons: it’s cheap, it’s easy and you don’t have to run out in the middle of the night to get diapers. Now, I should also say here that I am a Stay at Home Dad. This means that I don’t change only the occasional diaper. I am my son’s main caregiver and wind up changing most of the diapers during the week. So, I have gotten it all: the scary diaper, the leaky diaper, the puddle diaper, the “I don’t remember feeding that to my son” diaper, the single wipe diaper and the six wipes minimum diaper. (We also use cloth wipes in case you are wondering.)

I would like to say that I prefer the prefolds with the cover. The pockets are okay, but the pre-folds are so easy.

So, my son has been growing like a beast. He is a huge little monster. So the supposed 5-35lbs diapers we bought stopped fitting when he hit around 23lbs. This is because, like me, my son is shaped like a Scottish man. Long in the torso, no butt and some belly. Unlike me, my son is ginormous. I am not a tall man, if my son keeps up the pace he is growing at, he will be size Andre the Giant (did I just date myself a little bit there?).

So, my son has outgrown some of the diapers we bought because he is simply too long. The problem started off slowly, small leaks if he peed a lot or simply no good for sleeping. Then it got worse. They were just too short for his torso. Completely the wrong shape for my son.  Now, I am sure these diapers are great for other people, but they just didn’t fit my bug bear quite right.

So, my wife pointed me to several sites to peruse for new covers. Eventually she showed me Green Bees. I will be frank, my wife is cheap. She will tell you the same thing. And so, I was skeptical about these diapers because they were cheap as well: $33 for 6 solid colors with 1 insert each. I prefer the solid colors in bright, shiny primary colors. But, if they didn’t fit, $33 was okay. I also have to admit, I was skeptical about the insert. I don’t trust them in general to hold in all the pee.

Well, imagine my surprise when these diapers came in. Not only are they excellent quality (equivalent to a single $25 diaper we have) but they also fit like a champ! With room to grow! They have nice soft leg gussets (I’m told that is the word for them), hip snaps so we don’t get the little flappy wings, the inside is nice and soft and they fit both the inserts they sent, and also the large Indian prefolds we have easily. But, that was not the real test.

The real test was in the use.

I am happy to confirm that we have used them for 2 weeks now. They are great for day and night time use. They work equally well with the insert (single or double inserts) and with prefolds (even with soakers)! They also clean really nicely. They have been covered with Blueberry stains, strawberry bits, random food stuffs that I am not 100% certain exactly what it was, not to mention the post-processed food stuff that my child had consumed. All the stains have come out. We have not had one leak, one blow out or even the slightest hint of poop outside of the diaper. They work for several uses as covers without any residual smell in the diaper. And best of all, my son can’t get out of them. He can’t pull off the snaps or pull them down and run around like a nudist wild child he is. We have not seen any rash or leg lines.

They worked so well, we bought an additional 6 diapers.

Over all, I would highly recommend these diapers to anyone. They are so easy to use:
1. Remove old insert or prefold.
2. Clean baby, hoping he does not stick his hands in poop.
3. Set new insert or prefold on the diaper.
4. Snap diaper closed.
5. Let baby wild child run around like a screaming monkey.

I will be honest, there are some slight size differences between the diapers. Some are just slightly larger than others. Not a lot and all the snaps seem to be in the same place. I didn’t actually notice the slight size difference between them. My wife did, but she is OCD like that (though she would call it observant).

So, I would recommend these diapers to anyone. Not just those people on a budget.
